The Hierophant:
Description
Unlike the High Priestess, The Hierophant is fully enclosed inside a stone room with no open sky above. This detail reflects The Hierophant’s position as a symbol of the physical world’s religious rules and structure. He leads two followers who kneel before him. In one hand, he holds up two fingers, the symbol of a holy blessing, and in the other, a staff to show his authority. His red robe with white trim reflects authority with a hint of purity, while his golden crown announces his regality in the eyes of God. At his feet lie the golden keys to heaven.
The Hierophant:
Upright Meaning
The Hierophant upholds the structure of religion and its traditional systems and practices. As such, he may, at times, symbolize a marriage or a religious initiation. Personally, The Hierophant may represent a mentor in your life who provides you with the tools you need to grow in your spirituality or life journey. It may communicate that you are embarking on a new path, one blessed by the Divine.
More broadly, The Hierophant symbolizes education, as this is yet another traditional system that requires discipline to gain greater knowledge of the world and our place within it. You are encouraged at this time to embrace the role of a student. This is a time of listening to authorities rather than speaking as one. It is a time of learning, humility, and following rules. If you are on the right path, then this sort of conformity will come naturally and serve your best interest in the long run.
The Hierophant:
Reversed Meaning
If you have pulled a reversed Hierophant, be wary of false prophets. Be suspicious of any religious doctrine or society that touts great promises. This can range from a well-meaning but mis-lead social media influencer touting their manifestation course to a cult leader preying on those who feel lost on their life path. Remember to believe actions over words and to ensure that whoever you follow speaks from a place of love and not fear.
Perhaps you have already met such a character and are currently experiencing a spiritual crisis or have begun deconstructing old religious programming. Remember that you are not alone on this journey, nor are you to blame for those who may have taken advantage of your trust. Every person, however detrimental to our well-being, teaches us an important lesson. In this case, you are now far more capable of discerning hypocrisy and corruption within old and unquestioned structures.
